WHERE IS SOUR DUCK?
Address: 1814 East MLK Jr Boulevard, Austin, TX 78702
There might be a theme around location for our favorite spots…neighborhoods! Sour Duck, like Home Slice, is located in the middle of the Chestnut neighborhood in East Austin. There are sidewalks for checking out the area which has become busier with businesses as the years have progressed. Across the street you’ll find Juiceland, another Austin staple that deserves your money, Austin Daily Press and The Wheel. Down the street you can pop into Bennu for coffee and such. Also, like Batch, there is a bus stop right out front, so you’re covered there.
SOUR DUCK REVIEW
Sour Duck gets a 5 out of 5 rating for kid friendliness and is on our list of the top 10 kid friendly restaurants in all of Austin. It’s fantastic and I’d say within the top 3 for our family. In the words of Stefon from SNL, this place has everything:
- Play area – one of the best in the city! The outdoor patio is perfect for everyone. It’s a giant gravel area with benches and a stage (we’ll get to that below), a kids specific area with toys and generally ample room for the kids to run around a bit (supervised, of course…). The patio is covered by both a roof on one side and large trees on the other and the misters come on during the dog days of summer
- Food – delicious. The lot of it. From the bakery goods, the kouign amann is good, but inconsistent (admission: we lived in San Francisco for a bit and it turned me into a kouign amann snob because of b pattiserrie which was a 5 min walk from our place), the mexican street chips are thebomb.com and we can’t get enough of the dirty fried rice. And, we’ve said nothing about their sandwiches. Go here to eat without the kids too. Oh, kids menu! I don’t think you need it, but it’s there and tasty
- Drink – good beer list that covers a variety of types, cocktails, white, red wine, rose and bubbles and kombucha on draft amongst other non-alcoholic beverages
- Events – we visit Sour Duck most every Wednesday for both the Farmer’s Market and the live music which Hugo loves. There’s also Taco Monday and a Tuesday Bluegrass residency if jazz/swing isn’t to your taste on Wednesday. Note, this was paused during the pandemic, but all is back in business
